County Task Force Information

LORAIN COUNTY

Vicky and Dennis Moore made a presentation before the Lorain County Commissioners on Thursday, March 23, 2000, detailing the need for a county railroad safety task force. Lorain County (northern Ohio) has experienced increased train traffic, blocked crossings, and other major safety issues since the merger of CSX, Conrail, and Norfolk-Southern. Representatives Steven C. LaTourette and Dennis J. Kucinich, have secured funds to upgrade several crossings in the county. Vicky stated as long as you have "passive" crossings or trains running through your communities, you need a task force. No decision has been made to date on establishing a task force. Also present at the commissioners meeting was Huntington Township Trustee, Mary Beth Derikito, who supports establishing a railroad safety task force. Several members from the community expressed their willingness to be involved, and Vicky will follow up with calls, emails, until a decision is made. Mrs. Debbie Hovatter, who lost her nephew, Chad, in December 1995 at a dangerous passive crossing, has also contacted Lorain County Commissioners and Angels on Track Foundation expressing her willingness to participate.
