SAFETY GROUP RECEIVES FIRST ANNUAL “ANGEL OF JUSTICE” AWARD
The Stark County Academy of Trial Lawyers (SCATL) has selected
a local railroad safety group as the inaugural recipient of
its annual “Angel of Justice”
award. The “Angels on Track Foundation” received
the recognition and a donation from SCATL at a ceremony on
Friday at the Canton Marriott McKinley Grand Hotel.
Angels on Track was founded by Vicky and Denny Moore after
their youngest son, Ryan, and two of his friends were tragically
killed in a 1995 train-car collision. The Moore’s other
son survived the crash. There were no gates to protect motorists
at the crossing.
“The Foundation’s mission is to install gates at unprotected crossings
to prevent other families from suffering the same type of preventable tragedy,”
said Vicky Moore. Working with established county task forces,
the Foundation has successfully funded eleven railroad gate
and safety projects throughout Ohio totaling $296,000. It has
also funded driver awareness and education programs concerning
the hazards of ungated crossings and appropriate driver behavior.
SCATL President Brian R. Wilson applauded Angels on Track as
deserving of the award: “What the Moore’s have
done in our community is inspirational. From their personal,
unimaginable tragedy has come strength, a sense of purpose,
and an unwavering desire to make this community safer. They
are heroes in our own backyard and they deserve our recognition
and support.”
The “Angel of Justice” award was created by SCATL
in 2004 to honor local people and groups that make a difference
in promoting safety and/or justice in the Stark County area.
It was named after the golden angels that trumpet justice from
atop the county courthouse in downtown Canton.
Wilson hopes the yearly award serves as a springboard for more
donations to recipients like Angels on Track.
