Free Press Standard – Carrollton, Ohio - Carroll County

Letter to Editor, July 7, 2007:

Railroad crossings are a dangerous place to be and somewhere every ninety minutes there is a train versus motor vehicle crash in the United States some causing injury and others causing death. Ohio Revised Code (ORC) 4955.36 requires railroads to destroy or remove plants, trees, brush, or other obstructive vegetation upon its right of way at each intersection with a public road or highway for a distance of 600 feet. I have first hand dealings with a grade crossing here in Carroll County that is owned by Wheeling Lake Erie Railway of Brewster, OH. They have been notified of the complaint I filed in June 2007 and as of this letter no action has been taken on their behalf to clear the vegetation. Wheeling Lake Erie needs to step into the action and comply with the state law and create a clear sight view at this crossing. Communities and citizens need to examine crossings in their area before an accident or death occurs due to railroads not abiding by ORC section of law. If you find a dangerous crossing, click on the Angels on Track Foundation website (angelsontrack.org) and complete the dangerous crossing form.
